Shandong province’s flag proposal takes into account its importance as a center of both Confucianism and Taoism. The province’s abbreviation,  鲁 (Lu, the historical state home to Confucius) is above, followed by the taijitu (from wikipedia), an important Taoist symbol. At the bottom is 水 (Shuǐ, water), the most common symbol of Confucianism.
